Prof. Wei-xian Zhang is currently Professor of Environmental Engineering at Tongji University, Director of State Kay Laboratory for Pollution Control.

Prof. Zhang pioneered the research and development of the nanoscale Zero-valent Iron (nZVI) technology, published the first research on this topic in 1997, and conducted the first field experiment of in situ remediation in 2001. He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and received over 9,000 citations on this topic.

Prof. Zhang holds a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, and served as a tenured faculty of Lehigh University. He received the CAREER award for outstanding junior faculty from US NSF in 2000, and the 1000-talent professorship of China in 2010.

 主要内容:

Nanoparticles are ultrafine particles with size in the range of 1-100 nanometers, orders of magnitude smaller than typical bacteria in the environment. The most important feature of nanoparticles is their large reactive surface area, ideal for rapid surface reactions and degradation of environmental pollutants. We have developed several types of nanoparticles for environmental remediation and site cleanup. Over 100 pilot- and full- scale applications of the nanoparticles have been completed since 2001 with more being planned in North America, Europe and Asia. Research at Lehigh and Tongji Universities has developed methods of nanoparticle synthesis, characterization and large-scale applications.
